Well it is officially 2009. For the real estate industry, which I’m fond of currently, lets hope it is different than 2008. For most people lets hope this new year offers a time to start new things and quit old ones, because what we were doing in 2008 wasn’t really working that great.

So whats your plan? If you have waited until today to put together a 2009 plan, you are kind of behind aren’t you? I mean the year has technically started? and you are reading a blog post about planning your year?

Its going to be ok I’m going to help you out.

I don’t make New Years resolutions, they don’t really ever seem to work out. Instead I set goals and decide what things to quit. I useually start this process mentally in December. I start thinking back and looking to see how well my time is being used. There are only so many hours in a day anyone can work, so we need to make sure those hours are used doing the things that are most profitable.

For most people this will be fairly easy. For me it took me about 2 seconds to  answer this. These activities that were most profitable are probably the things you should focus on the most.

It also is a great time to think about what things are you currently doing that are just a complete waste of time! If you haven’t read “the Dip” by Seth Godin, its time to. In Seth’s book he talks about every industry has a hurdle you have to cross to be number 1. The larger and more competitive the industry the bigger that hurdle is. If you don’t have the resources to possibly be number 1, should you continue doing what you are doing? This book is a great road map to planning a business, starting a business and deciding if you should stay in business.

I mention this book because not only is the New Year a time for new beginings, its a great time to quit those projects that are not working out, so you can free up your time for things with more potential.

Have a Happy New Year.
